Government Automated Facial Recognition (AFR) software at border control gates must segment the subject's facial geometry from the background. Shadows, lines, and textures confuse biometric edge-detection algorithms, causing facial extraction errors and automatic visa refusal.

A plain background must be completely uniform and monotone. It must contain no visible objects (such as furniture, lamps, or picture frames), no wallpaper textures, no wall cracks, and no patterns. A plain painted wall or a smooth photographic backdrop is required.

• •Pure White / Off-White: Mandated by the United States, India, Canada, China, and Australia.
• •Light Grey or Cream: Specifically advised by the United Kingdom (GOV.UK) to enhance contrast with pale skin tones.
• •Light Blue / Light Grey: Required by France (France-Visas) for Schengen applications; France explicitly discourages pure white.
• •Red / Blue: Historically used by Malaysia and select regional passports; modern tourist visas generally require white.

Shadows cast behind the head or across the shoulders are an immediate rejection trigger. To avoid shadows: stand 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 1 meter) away from the wall, place your light source directly in front of you at eye level, and avoid using single overhead room lights.

If you photographed yourself against a slightly uneven home wall, subtle algorithmic background smoothing or uniform recoloring can ensure compliance. However, never use crude cutout tools that leave jagged halos around hair or shoulders, as consular officers reject photos with visible editing artifacts.
