UK Visa Photo Requirements

When applying online for a UK visa (such as a Standard Visitor, Student, or Skilled Worker visa), your digital photo must satisfy these core machine-validated criteria:

The photograph must be at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall. It must maintain a vertical (portrait) aspect ratio of approximately 4:5. Square or landscape images will be rejected by the online submission system.

The file size must be at least 50 KB and no larger than 6 MB (6,144 KB). Photos smaller than 50 KB typically lack sufficient resolution for biometric facial recognition, while files above 6 MB exceed portal server limits. The file format must be standard JPG or JPEG.

The background must be plain and light-coloured, such as light grey or cream. Unlike some jurisdictions that require pure white, GOV.UK recommends light grey or cream to ensure clear contrast with lighter skin tones and hair. The background must be completely uniform, free of shadows, wall patterns, objects, or textures.

The UK government strictly forbids any digital alteration: you must not use software to smooth skin, remove red-eye, change face shape, enhance colors, or replace the background digitally. The image must represent a true and unedited likeness of the applicant.

• •Expression: Completely neutral with mouth closed and eyes open and clearly visible.
• •Eyeglasses: Strongly discouraged. If worn, there must be no glare or reflection on the lenses, and frames must not obscure any part of the eyes.
• •Head Coverings: Allowed only for religious or medical reasons; the full face from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead must be completely uncovered.
• •Recency: Must be taken within the last one month of application submission.
